The Cross River State Government has sealed three private healthcare facilities operating in the central senatorial district of the state, citing multiple violations including quackery, lack of registration with the Ministry of Health, outdated equipment, and a history of patient deaths. The action was announced in a statement signed by Dr Stephen Agbor of the Department of Medical and Dental Service and Dr Dan Abubakar on Saturday, 11 July 2026, following an inspection by the state's Task Force on Health Quality and Anti-Quackery.
According to the statement, the sealed facilities are Gifted Hands Empowerment Foundation in Ikom and Ekori, Rockalive Medical Centre in Nko, and Benson Clinic in Ikom. The taskforce action followed intelligence reports on the activities of these health centres. Among the most alarming findings was that Gifted Hands Empowerment Foundation operated without a single licensed medical personnel and without any registration with the state's health ministry. The facility, which had other branches in Ekori located in Sam Eko's house at Ntan Ekori, was found to have been operating in a clinically unsafe environment and had a history of a high post-surgical mortality rate. A woman from Yakurr reportedly died in the facility shortly after a surgical operation on 7 June 2026.
Rockalive Medical Centre in Nko was also operated by unqualified personnel, with the government noting the absence of necessary healthcare equipment and poor facilities. The taskforce further revealed that Benson Clinic in Ikom was being run by a teacher with no medical training background whatsoever. The clinic had no licensed doctor on its staff, operated in a dilapidated facility with no basic hospital equipment, and was involved in several unethical medical practices. The state government has directed the immediate closure of the three facilities and warned that further inspections would be conducted across the state to clamp down on substandard and illegal health operations. The action is part of a broader crackdown on quackery and unregulated medical practices that have continued to endanger the lives of residents across Cross River State.
