Republican Senator Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, a key ally of President Donald Trump and a towering figure in US foreign policy for more than two decades, has died at the age of 71 following a brief and sudden illness, his office announced on Saturday, 11 July 2026. Graham's death has sent shockwaves through Washington, where he was regarded as one of the Senate's most influential voices on defence, national security, and international affairs. In a statement posted on his official social media accounts, Graham's office confirmed that the senator passed away on the evening of 11 July after what it described as a "brief and sudden illness", without providing further details about the cause of death. The statement also appealed for privacy for the Graham family during what it called an "incredibly difficult period".
Elected to the US Senate in 2002, Graham was serving his fourth term and was running for a fifth in the upcoming midterm elections. He turned 71 just days before his death. Before his Senate tenure, he served in the US House of Representatives, having been elected in 1994. Graham's political career was defined by his evolution from a critic of Donald Trump during the 2016 presidential primaries to one of his most loyal and influential allies in the Senate. He became a regular advisor to the president on foreign policy, particularly on issues relating to Iran and Russia, and was a frequent presence alongside Trump on the golf course. He had just returned from Kyiv, where he met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Friday, 10 July, underscoring his continued active engagement in global affairs until his final days. On the same day, he also announced an agreement with the Trump administration to move forward on a package of Russia sanctions.
Tributes poured in from across the political spectrum. President Donald Trump led the tributes in a post on his Truth Social platform early on Sunday, 12 July, writing: "Senator Lindsey Graham, one of the greatest people and Senators I have ever known, is dead! He was always working, and was a true American Patriot. Lindsey will be greatly missed!!!" Graham's relationship with the late Senator John McCain, another towering figure in the Republican Party, was also a defining feature of his career. The two were close friends, and Graham often spoke of McCain's influence on his life and political philosophy.
Graham was perhaps best known for his hawkish foreign policy stance. As a member of the House in the 1990s, he backed policies aimed at isolating Iran and limiting its missile and nuclear programmes. He later cheered on Trump's decision to strike nuclear sites last year and was a vocal supporter of the latest conflict. His advocacy for a muscular US foreign policy made him a polarising figure internationally; Moscow had included him on its list of terrorists and extremists. He served as Chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee and was also Chairman of the Senate Budget Committee at the time of his death. He had also mounted a brief bid for the Republican presidential nomination in 2015.
The sparse details surrounding Graham's death come amid growing concern in Washington about the lack of transparency regarding lawmakers' health. The South Carolina Republican's passing leaves a significant void in the Senate, where he was a pivotal figure on judicial confirmations, budget negotiations, and foreign policy debates. As the nation mourns the loss of a politician who shaped US foreign policy for two decades, his legacy as a fierce defender of American interests on the global stage, and as a man who evolved from critic to confidant of a president, will be debated for years to come.
