Governor Ademola Adeleke has assured the European Union Election Observation Mission of his administration's unwavering commitment to conducting a free, fair, and credible governorship election on August 15, 2026, as the Austrian Ambassador to Nigeria confirmed that the bloc will deploy observers to monitor the poll. The assurance came during a courtesy visit by Ambassador Peter Guschelbauer to the Governor at the Government House in Osogbo over the weekend, according to a statement issued on Sunday, July 12, 2026, by the governor's spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed.
Ambassador Guschelbauer, accompanied by the embassy's political adviser, disclosed that the European Union remains committed to strengthening democratic institutions by observing elections and encouraging compliance with Nigeria's electoral laws and international democratic standards. He noted that the Osun governorship election holds particular significance as an important precursor to the 2027 general elections, expressing confidence that the poll would be conducted in line with democratic principles. The Austrian envoy commended Governor Adeleke's administration for what he described as its commitment to good governance and urged all political stakeholders to conduct themselves peacefully in the interest of political stability and national development. Highlighting the longstanding cultural ties between Austria and Osun State, the ambassador recalled the historical connection between his country and the Osun-Osogbo Sacred Grove and expressed Austria's willingness to deepen cooperation with the state in the areas of cultural preservation, tourism, and investment through stronger partnerships with Austrian businesses.
Responding to the ambassador, Governor Adeleke welcomed the planned deployment of EU observers and appealed to the European Union to pay special attention to the forthcoming governorship election, stressing the importance of international observation in enhancing the credibility of the electoral process. He said the presence of international observers would further strengthen compliance with democratic norms and the Electoral Act, reinforcing the commitment to free and fair polls. "The observer intervention of the European Union will strengthen compliance with democratic practices and the Electoral Act for free and fair polls," Adeleke said. "Our government remains committed to free and fair elections as well as creating an enabling environment for investors and development partners."
The governor used the occasion to highlight investment opportunities in the state, stating that Osun offers immense opportunities in agriculture, renewable energy, education, technology, mining, and vocational development. He expressed readiness to work with Austria and Austrian businesses in exploring these opportunities for mutual growth and prosperity. In a related development, a delegation from the British High Commission is expected to visit Osun State this week as part of its pre-election engagement with stakeholders ahead of the August 15 governorship election. The planned visits by the British delegation and the expected EU observers come amid heightened political activities in the state, with reports of rising political tension following attacks on members of the Accord Party allegedly by suspected thugs.
Meanwhile, the Osun State Government has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Green Apple HK Nigeria Limited to deploy electric vehicles for use by government agencies, with plans to subsequently expand the initiative to the public transportation sector. Governor Adeleke disclosed this while unveiling the first batch of electric motorcycles under the Imole Electric Motorbikes Initiative, describing the agreement as a major milestone in the state's drive towards sustainable transportation. The governor commended the lead partner of Green Apple HK Nigeria Limited, Ibukun Demuren, for supporting the initiative, noting that electric mobility would reduce transportation costs and promote environmental sustainability. "Very soon, Osun will see tricycles running on electricity. You will see cars running on electricity. You will see buses running on electricity, right here in Osun State," Adeleke said. "This is what we are building for you: a future where you spend less on fuel, and keep more for your family, your children, and your business."
As the August 15 governorship election draws nearer, the deployment of EU observers and the planned visit by the British delegation signal the international community's keen interest in the electoral process, underscoring the importance of credible elections in strengthening Nigeria's democratic institutions. Governor Adeleke's assurance of a free and fair poll, coupled with the EU's commitment to monitoring the election, sets the stage for what observers expect to be a closely watched contest that could have implications for the 2027 general elections.
