France captain Kylian Mbappe and Argentina skipper Lionel Messi are locked at the top of the FIFA World Cup 2026 Golden Boot standings with eight goals each, but Mbappe leads the race due to the tournament's tiebreaker rules, FIFA has confirmed. According to the official adidas Golden Boot standings published on the world governing body's website, Mbappe returned to the front of the pack after scoring his eighth goal of the tournament in France's quarter-final clash with Morocco. The French forward moved back ahead of Argentina legend Messi, who also has eight goals, by virtue of having more assists than his rival.
Under FIFA's regulations for the Golden Boot award, if two or more players score the same number of goals, the number of assists shall be decisive. Currently, Mbappe has registered three assists to his name, while Messi has two, giving the Frenchman the edge in the standings. If two or more players are still equal after taking into account the number of assists, the total minutes played becomes the deciding factor, with the player who has played fewer minutes ranked higher. Mbappe has played 563 minutes, while Messi has played 608 minutes.
As of Sunday, 12 July 2026, the top five in the Golden Boot race are as follows. Kylian Mbappe leads with eight goals and three assists. Lionel Messi is second with eight goals and two assists. Erling Haaland of Norway is third with seven goals and zero assists, though his bid has ended following Norway's quarter-final exit. England pair Jude Bellingham and Harry Kane are tied for fourth with six goals apiece, both contributing one assist each. With only Argentina, England, France and Spain left in the tournament, Mbappe, Messi, Bellingham and Kane will have further opportunities to add to their tallies in the semi-finals and potentially the final.
The Golden Boot race at the 2026 World Cup has been a dramatic three-way battle between Mbappe, Messi and Haaland, with each player one-upping the other throughout the tournament. Mbappe's goal in the quarter-final against Morocco not only put him level with Messi on goals but also saw him become the first player in France's history to be directly involved in 100 international goals, achieving the milestone with 64 goals and 36 assists for Les Bleus. Messi, meanwhile, holds the outright record with 21 career World Cup goals, while Mbappe sits directly behind his rival in second place with 20.
The Golden Boot race remains wide open as the tournament enters its final stages. France will face Spain in the semi-finals, while Argentina take on England. Mbappe and Messi both have at least one, and possibly two, more matches to add to their tallies. Haaland, whose Norway side were eliminated by England in the quarter-finals, can only watch as the remaining contenders battle for the coveted award. Mbappe, who won the Golden Boot in 2022, remains on course to defend his title. However, with the likes of Bellingham and Kane also in contention, the race for the top scorer award is far from over.
