Female students of Government Girls' Secondary School, Tafawa Balewa, Bauchi State, have been left in distress after a heavy windstorm blew off the roof of their hostel during a torrential downpour, leaving their dormitories completely submerged in floodwater and exposing the dilapidated state of the building. Images and a video obtained by DAILY POST showed the hostel completely taken over by floodwater, with no visible roofing sheets and rows of metal bunk beds standing inside the waterlogged building. Students were captured standing barefoot in the flooded hostel, using buckets and other containers to scoop water from the dormitory in a desperate effort to drain the flooded rooms and make them habitable.
The incident, which occurred on Saturday, 11 July 2026, has renewed concerns over the state of infrastructure in public boarding schools and the need for greater investment in educational facilities across the state. According to the Bauchi State Commissioner for Education, Hon. Abdulkadir Ibrahim, four hostels at the school were severely damaged by the windstorm, forcing the ministry to temporarily relocate students pending government intervention. The commissioner disclosed that assessment teams had been deployed to all affected schools to determine the extent of the damage, and that a comprehensive report would be submitted to Governor Bala Mohammed to facilitate prompt intervention and ensure the speedy restoration of teaching and learning.
Speaking in a video obtained by SaharaReporters, a concerned resident identified as Sunday Jonathan appealed to the government, well-meaning Nigerians, and other good Samaritans to urgently intervene and provide assistance for the affected students. He spoke in both Hausa and his native language, drawing attention to the worsening condition of the hostel. "This is their hostel. The students are experiencing serious challenges, and they need urgent support. I kindly appeal to everyone who is able to contribute in any way to please come to their aid," he said.
The flooded hostel and the deteriorating state of the building have also stirred concerns about the health and safety risks facing the students, especially as they continue to occupy rooms affected by floodwater and damaged roofing. The incident has raised fresh concerns over the condition of public school infrastructure in Bauchi State, particularly the safety and welfare of students residing in government-owned hostels. Residents and concerned citizens have called on the Bauchi State Government, relevant education authorities, emergency agencies, and humanitarian organisations to urgently rehabilitate the hostel and provide immediate relief materials to the affected students before the situation worsens. The development comes amid broader concerns over the vulnerability of schools across Bauchi State to extreme weather events, following a similar windstorm that destroyed dozens of homes and school facilities in parts of Jigawa State earlier in the year.
