A fuel tanker driver, Abubakar, popularly known as Abu DR, has been killed after bandits attacked travellers along the Gurusu–Anka road near Manya Bridge in Zamfara State on the morning of Monday, 13 July 2026. According to multiple reports from local sources, the attack saw the bandits open fire on travellers, killing the driver and setting his tanker ablaze in what has become another tragic chapter in the relentless cycle of violence plaguing the North-West region.
A heartbreaking image circulating on social media is said to show the young son of the deceased standing beside his father's body, a scene that has drawn widespread shock, grief, and condemnation across the country. The photograph, which has gone viral, has become a grim symbol of the human cost of banditry, with many Nigerians questioning how long communities must endure such atrocities before decisive action is taken.
The attack occurred along the Gurusu–Anka road, a corridor that has increasingly become a flashpoint for bandit activity. The Anka-Bagega-Gummi axis has been under intense pressure from criminal groups, with security forces and local vigilantes launching sustained operations against armed bandits in the area. Despite these efforts, the attacks have continued unabated, leaving many communities vulnerable and residents living in constant fear.
The killing of Abubakar follows a pattern of attacks targeting commercial drivers and travellers who are often stopped, robbed, and killed by armed groups operating along major roads in Zamfara, Katsina, Sokoto, and other North-Western states. In a major operation in Gummi Local Government Area, the Zamfara State Government confirmed that about 300 suspected terrorists were neutralised in a major offensive that dealt a significant blow to criminal networks. Troops of Operation FANSAN YAMMA have also intensified their operations across Zamfara, Katsina, and other states, with the military reporting the rescue of kidnapped victims and the recovery of weapons from fleeing terrorists.
The Zamfara State Government has also recently repelled bandit attacks on vulnerable communities, with the prompt intervention of security forces and vigilantes helping to prevent harm to residents. Despite these efforts, the attack on Abubakar underscores the continued challenges facing the North-West, where banditry has persisted despite sustained military offensives.
For the young son of Abubakar, the image of him standing beside his father's body will haunt him for life. The tragedy highlights the urgent need for enhanced security along vulnerable highways and a comprehensive strategy to address the root causes of banditry in the North-West. As one social media user lamented: "How many more heartbreaking scenes like this must we witness before real action is taken?" For the family of Abubakar, the answer comes too late.
