The Anambra State Police Command has arrested three women for their alleged involvement in a child trafficking syndicate that specialised in selling children, including a four-year-old boy sold for N2 million and a two-week-old baby sold to a buyer still at large. The suspects were apprehended on Saturday evening, 11 July 2026, at a motor park in Onitsha by operatives attached to the Awada Divisional Headquarters, according to a statement issued on Sunday by the command's Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga.

The suspects were identified as Florence Nnakuzie, 45; Hannah Ugah, 52; and Chinasa Daniel, 27. Preliminary investigations revealed that Daniel allegedly brought two children—a two-week-old baby and a four-year-old child—on two separate occasions between June and December 2025 and handed them over to Ugah. Daniel further disclosed that the four-year-old child was subsequently handed over to Nnakuzie and allegedly sold for the sum of N2 million, while the two-week-old baby was reportedly sold to another woman who is currently at large.

The Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, CP Ikioye Orutugu, described child trafficking as a grave violation of human rights and a crime against humanity. He directed the immediate transfer of the case to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Awka, for a comprehensive and discreet investigation. The CP also ordered operatives to intensify efforts to identify and apprehend every member of the trafficking syndicate and to commence coordinated operations aimed at locating, rescuing, and reuniting the trafficked children with their biological families.

The police command commended members of the public whose timely and credible information led to the successful operation and urged residents to continue supporting the police with useful intelligence. The suspects are currently assisting the police with vital information towards apprehending other members of the syndicate who are still at large. The arrest marks another significant breakthrough in the command's sustained fight against child trafficking in the state. Investigations are ongoing, and the suspects will be charged to court upon completion of the inquiry.
