Nigeria has reaffirmed its commitment to deepening diplomatic relations with Sierra Leone following the formal presentation of Letters of Credence by Nigeria's High Commissioner, Mrs Ayo Luther-Ogbomode, to President Julius Maada Bio at State House in Freetown on Thursday, 9 July 2026. The ceremony, which was confirmed by the Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs in a statement on Monday, 13 July 2026, formally recognised Luther-Ogbomode as Nigeria's accredited representative in Sierra Leone, enabling her to fully discharge diplomatic responsibilities in the West African nation. The presentation, which took place alongside similar ceremonies for the newly accredited envoys of Jamaica and Angola, was followed by an audience with President Bio, during which the Nigerian High Commissioner conveyed the warm greetings and best wishes of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. She reiterated Nigeria's commitment to strengthening the longstanding bonds of friendship and brotherhood that have historically united the two countries and congratulated President Bio on his assumption of the Chairmanship of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

Luther-Ogbomode, a seasoned diplomat who previously served as Minister (Political/Economic) at the Nigerian Embassy in Beijing, brings significant experience to her new role. Her appointment reflects Nigeria's continued emphasis on deepening engagement with neighbouring West African states. According to the Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Nigerian envoy's posting is expected to focus on enhancing economic partnerships, supporting Sierra Leone's development priorities, and advancing regional integration goals.

Nigeria and Sierra Leone have maintained close diplomatic ties for decades, founded on shared membership of ECOWAS, the African Union, and the Commonwealth. The two countries have collaborated extensively on regional peacekeeping, democratic governance, security, trade, and economic development. Nigeria played a pivotal role in restoring peace to Sierra Leone during the country's civil war through the ECOWAS Monitoring Group (ECOMOG), contributing the bulk of troops and resources. Successive Nigerian administrations have maintained support for post-conflict reconstruction, democratic consolidation, and institutional development.

President Bio, who also serves as Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, described Nigeria as one of Sierra Leone's closest and most trusted partners, expressing gratitude for Nigeria's sacrifices in helping to restore peace to the country. He said he looked forward to strengthening cooperation in security, democracy, good governance, regional integration, trade and economic development during the envoy's tenure. Bilateral cooperation between the two nations spans trade, security, education, and development, with both countries collaborating on initiatives addressing maritime security, counter-terrorism, and economic diversification under frameworks such as the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). Trade volumes include Nigerian exports of petroleum products, manufactured goods, and services to Sierra Leone, alongside Sierra Leonean agricultural and mineral exports.

The latest diplomatic engagement comes as Nigeria continues to strengthen its foreign policy focus on regional stability, economic diplomacy, and deeper cooperation among ECOWAS member states. It also follows President Bio's emergence as ECOWAS Chairman, a role that places him at the forefront of efforts to address political, economic, and security challenges across West Africa. Since assuming the chairmanship in June 2025, succeeding Nigeria's President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Bio has prioritised restoring constitutional order in transitional states, enhancing regional security cooperation, and rebuilding the bloc's credibility. Nigeria, as West Africa's largest economy and a founding ECOWAS member, remains a critical partner in these efforts.
