The Eastern Bar Forum, a gathering of lawyers from 48 branches across Nigeria's old Eastern Region, was held in Owerri, Imo State, from 10 to 12 July 2026, expecting hospitality and respect from the host state. Instead, according to human rights lawyer Chinedu Agu, the event was marred by what he described as a "public spectacle of shame" after the Imo State Government withdrew its sponsorship of the welcome cocktail and dinner and reportedly instructed hotel management not to accept payment from the Nigerian Bar Association for the venue.
The controversy was sparked by the government's displeasure over the Eastern Bar Forum's recognition of Hon. Justice I.O. Agugua as the Acting Chief Judge of Imo State. The Attorney-General had written to the forum on 8 July 2026, declaring that Agugua's tenure had expired and that no correspondence should be addressed to her. However, the National Judicial Council had extended her acting appointment for another three months, from 26 June to 26 September 2026.
Agu criticised the Attorney-General's action as a constitutional overreach, arguing that it is not his role to declare the office of the Chief Judge vacant. He also drew a stark contrast with Abia State, where lawyers witnessed genuine cooperation between the Executive and the Judiciary during a similar event in January 2026. In Imo, however, hospitality was withdrawn, and the event was moved to different venues, leaving many lawyers frustrated. Agu called on Imolites, lawyers, and civil society to resist what he described as the subjugation of the justice sector, warning that the last remaining independent institution in the state is under siege.
