The people of Bukkuyum town in Zamfara State woke up on Tuesday, 14 July 2026, to a scene of both relief and grim satisfaction after security forces successfully repelled a large-scale attack by heavily armed bandits, inflicting heavy casualties on the assailants and dealing a significant blow to the criminal networks that have long terrorised the North-West. According to local sources, the attack began in the early hours of Monday night when a large group of bandits, numbering in the scores, attempted to overrun the town, but met with stiff resistance from troops of Operation FANSAN YAMMA and local security forces. The ensuing gun battle, which lasted for several hours, resulted in the neutralisation of scores of bandits, with residents reportedly counting at least 20 bodies left behind by the fleeing attackers.

The intensity of the resistance put up by the troops was decisive in turning the tide of the battle. Security sources told Zagazola Makama that the bandits, who had arrived in large numbers and were well armed, were caught off guard by the superior firepower and tactical coordination of the military. "The troops were on high alert and responded with overwhelming force," a source said. "The bandits suffered heavy losses and were forced to retreat in disarray, leaving behind several of their dead and a significant amount of weaponry". The operation, which took place in the Makakkari forest area of the local government, saw fighter jets and ground troops working in coordination, a synergy that has become a hallmark of Operation FANSAN YAMMA's success in the region.

Eyewitnesses told journalists that the sound of heavy gunfire and explosions echoed through the town for hours, creating panic initially, but soon giving way to relief as the army gained the upper hand. "We were terrified when the shooting started, but we knew the soldiers would not let them take over," said Malam Usman, a resident of Bukkuyum. "By morning, we saw the bodies of the bandits lying in the bushes. It was a terrible sight, but it was also a confirmation that our soldiers are truly fighting for us". Residents have since called on the authorities to sustain the offensive against armed groups, arguing that the momentum gained from this victory should not be lost.

In a particularly unusual turn of events, local sources also revealed that one of the neutralised bandits was reportedly active on TikTok, with videos linked to him resurfacing and circulating widely on social media following the operation. The videos, which show the deceased bandit brandishing weapons and boasting about his exploits, have sparked a fresh debate on the role of social media in glamourising criminality and the challenges it poses to security agencies trying to profile and track these individuals. The discovery of the bandit's social media presence has also raised questions about how these criminal elements operate, often using the same digital platforms as ordinary citizens to project an image of power and impunity.

The residents of Bukkuyum and the surrounding villages have hailed the military's performance as a morale booster and a sign that the government's security policies are beginning to yield tangible results. However, they have also urged the authorities to sustain the offensive and not allow the bandits to regroup. "This is a victory, but it is only a battle, not the war," said local community leader Alhaji Sani. "We are urging the troops to follow the fleeing bandits into their hideouts and finish them off. We cannot keep living in fear of attacks that happen once the army pulls back".

The attack on Bukkuyum comes just days after the killing of the notorious bandit kingpin Kachalla Sani Yellow, also known as Kachalla Yellow, in a separate operation in Anka Local Government Area. Sani Yellow, who was reportedly killed on July 10, 2026, was regarded as one of the most influential bandit commanders terrorising communities in Anka, Bukkuyum, Maru and neighbouring local government areas of Zamfara State. His death, combined with the heavy losses suffered by the bandits in Monday's attack, represents a significant success for the military's campaign to dismantle criminal networks in the region.

The operation in Bukkuyum is the latest in a series of successful offensives by Operation FANSAN YAMMA, which has been intensifying its campaign against terrorists and bandits in the North-West. Over the past week, the troops have recorded several victories, including the repelling of attacks on communities, the neutralisation of terrorist commanders, and the recovery of weapons and ammunition. The military has also been engaging in air and ground operations, targeting bandit camps and disrupting their logistics and supply lines. The operation has enjoyed significant support from local communities, who have been providing actionable intelligence to the troops, a partnership that has been critical to the success of these missions.

As the troops continue their clearance operations and consolidate their gains, the people of Bukkuyum and the wider Zamfara region are hoping that the latest victory marks a turning point in the long-running battle against banditry. For now, the message is clear: the security forces are determined to deny the criminals any freedom of action, and those who choose to take up arms against the state will face the full force of the law and the military's firepower.
