The University of Jos (UNIJOS) community was thrown into shock and panic on Tuesday, 14 July 2026, after the lifeless, beheaded body of a middle-aged man was discovered on a farmland within the institution's Permanent Site, raising fears over the escalating insecurity in the area and leaving many residents of the campus community questioning their safety.

According to multiple eyewitness accounts, the victim, whose identity has not been officially released, was found in the early hours of Tuesday with his head severed and missing, triggering immediate alarm among students, university staff, and residents living around the campus. A 300-level student of the university, Pius Atok, who spoke to Vanguard, confirmed that the discovery was made on a farm located within the university community. "The body was found this morning on a farm around the university community. From what we gathered, the victim was neither a student nor a member of staff of the university," Atok said.

A senior university official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorised to speak to the media, confirmed the incident, stating that preliminary findings indicated the deceased was a farmer who regularly cultivated crops on the farmland where his body was found. According to the official, the victim is neither a student nor a staff member of the university, but is known to people around the area because he usually comes there to farm. He said they believe he came very early that morning, as he normally does, and that what actually happened is still unclear, but from the nature of the attack, it appears those responsible came specifically to kill him and made away with his head.

The Chief Security Officer of the university, Mr Agama Tangni, also confirmed the incident to journalists in Jos on Tuesday, stating that the deceased was neither a student nor a staff member. He explained that although the victim was not affiliated with the university, his identity was known because of his regular presence at the location where the incident occurred. The Chief Security Officer suggested that the incident was a targeted attack, adding that the assailants appeared to have monitored the victim before carrying out the act. He said he did not know whether the assailants had been monitoring him, but from the look of things, the attackers targeted him, beheaded him and went away with his severed head.

Tangni disclosed that the deceased's relatives had been informed of the incident, while the body had been deposited at the Bingham University Teaching Hospital. He further stated that the university management had been briefed about the development and would communicate further with members of the university community.

As of the time of filing this report, the Plateau State Police Command had yet to issue an official statement on the incident. Efforts to reach the spokesperson of the Plateau State Police Command, SP Alfred Alabo, for confirmation and further details were unsuccessful. The gruesome discovery has renewed concerns over the deteriorating security situation in Plateau State, where farming communities and educational institutions have increasingly become targets of violence. For the students and staff of UNIJOS, the image of a headless body on a campus farm has raised urgent questions about their safety, while the university community awaits an official statement from the management and a swift investigation by security agencies to bring the perpetrators to justice.
