The Lagos State Government has intensified its enforcement of environmental laws with the arrest of a 56-year-old man, John Ehidreme, for allegedly dumping refuse into a drainage channel in the Ikorodu area of the state. The suspect was apprehended on Tuesday, July 14, 2026, by officials of the Lagos State Environmental Taskforce at his residence located at No. 18 Oluoga Street, Ikorodu, after he was caught disposing of waste into the drainage system.
The Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, announced the arrest via his official X handle, reaffirming the government's zero-tolerance stance on environmental violations. He said, "Earlier today, Mr John Ehidreme, 56, was arrested for illegally dumping refuse into a drainage channel at No. 18 Oluoga, Ikorodu". Wahab emphasised that indiscriminate waste disposal is a direct violation of the state's environmental laws, warning that such actions obstruct drainage channels, contribute to flooding, and pose significant public health and environmental risks to the entire community.
The arrest is part of the state government's ongoing crackdown on environmental offenders, as authorities intensify efforts to keep drainage systems free of waste and reduce the risk of flooding, particularly during the rainy season. This enforcement action comes closely on the heels of another operation in the Pedro area of Shomolu, where a resident identified as Ms. McCarthy was arrested after she allegedly directed her child to dump refuse into a covered drainage system. Commissioner Wahab strongly condemned such acts, urging parents to instill environmental responsibility in their children and warning that encouraging acts that damage public infrastructure or obstruct drainage channels would not be tolerated.
The Lagos State Government has reiterated its commitment to keeping Lagos clean and resilient against seasonal flooding, stressing that this requires active cooperation from all residents. Wahab urged residents to dispose of their waste responsibly and patronise only government-approved waste management facilities. A video shared by the government captured the suspect shortly after his arrest, reinforcing the state's determination to enforce environmental sanitation laws and hold offenders accountable. As the government continues its campaign against improper waste disposal, residents are reminded that environmental violations carry legal consequences and that collective responsibility is essential to safeguarding public health and the environment.
