Troops of the Nigerian Army’s 149 Battalion, working in collaboration with members of the Civilian Joint Task Force, have arrested a suspected informant for the Islamic State West Africa Province in Gubio Local Government Area of Borno State, following an intelligence-led operation that uncovered his role in a deadly terrorist attack last month. The suspect, who was apprehended at about 5:00 p.m. on July 14, 2026, in Gubio town, has reportedly confessed to leading the terrorist infiltration that occurred on June 16, 2026, an attack that claimed the life of a CJTF member.

During a preliminary interrogation, which was recorded on video and shared by security analyst and counterinsurgency expert Zagazola Makama, the suspect made a series of chilling admissions in the Hausa language. He identified his hometown as Gubio but denied having any family relationship with members of the terrorist group. When questioned about his connection to a man identified as "Adam Boko Haram," the suspect said the man was his friend and recruiter, adding that they met on the road. He disclosed that he was instructed to purchase Tramadol for the terrorist and admitted to having spent nights with him, although he claimed their relationship had not lasted up to two months.

The interrogation then shifted to the June 16 attack. The suspect admitted that terrorists intercepted him before the assault and ordered him to lead them to the target location. According to his account, the insurgents initially transported him on three motorcycles, while the entire convoy consisted of about 30 motorcycles. He confessed that he guided the terrorists to the location where the attack was carried out. The suspect further revealed that the terrorists specifically instructed him to sit down once the shooting started. Pressed further, he admitted that after he showed them the place, the terrorists spread out and opened fire.

The arrest forms part of ongoing counter-insurgency operations by Operation HADIN KAI, aimed at dismantling terrorist support networks by targeting informants, collaborators and logistics facilitators across the North-East. In separate operations across Borno State within the same 24-hour period, troops also apprehended a suspected ISWAP/JAS informant in Dusuman Ward, Mafa Local Government Area, who allegedly met with terrorists at Labe village to provide intelligence on troop movements. Additionally, troops of the 73 Battalion arrested a suspected ISWAP member in Konduga Local Government Area after he voluntarily surrendered, confessing to participating in three attacks on Delwa.

Military sources confirmed that the suspect is currently in custody and undergoing further investigation to identify other members of the terrorist network and uncover additional details surrounding the June attack. The operations are part of sustained efforts to dismantle terrorist support networks, deny insurgents freedom of movement and improve security across the North-East.
