The Transmission Company of Nigeria has announced an urgent maintenance exercise scheduled at its Kukwaba 132/33kV Transmission Substation on Friday, July 18, 2026, from 9 a.m. to 12 noon, which will result in a temporary power outage affecting several areas in the Federal Capital Territory. The urgent maintenance is to enable TCN maintenance crew to work on a line isolator at the substation, a critical component that ensures the safe and reliable transmission of electricity. According to a public notice issued by the company's General Manager, Public Affairs, Ndidi Mbah, the exercise is necessary to prevent potential equipment failure and ensure the long-term stability of the transmission network.
During the three-hour maintenance period, the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) will be unable to off-take electricity to its customers connected to its Wuye 1 & 2 Injection Substations, Idu Railway Station, EFCC, Coca-Cola Company, Idu Industrial Zone, Citec Estate and parts of Life Camp. The affected areas are expected to experience a complete power outage for the duration of the exercise. TCN has apologised for any inconvenience this outage may cause customers in the affected areas and has assured the public that power supply will be restored immediately after the successful completion of the maintenance work.
The scheduled maintenance is part of TCN's ongoing efforts to ensure the reliability and stability of Nigeria's transmission infrastructure, which has faced significant challenges in recent years due to ageing equipment, inadequate investment, and operational constraints. The Kukwaba 132/33kV Transmission Substation is a critical node in the FCT's power distribution network, supplying electricity to industrial, commercial and residential customers in the nation's capital. The urgent maintenance exercise highlights the importance of proactive infrastructure management in preventing larger system failures that could cause widespread disruptions.
Residents and businesses in the affected areas have been advised to make necessary arrangements to manage the temporary outage, which is expected to last for only three hours. TCN has urged customers to remain patient and assured them that the maintenance team will work diligently to complete the exercise within the scheduled timeframe. The company has also reiterated its commitment to improving power supply reliability across the country through sustained investments in transmission infrastructure and regular maintenance programmes.
TCN's notice has been widely circulated on social media and other communication channels to ensure that affected customers are adequately informed. The company has also advised customers to report any issues related to the outage to their respective electricity distribution companies. As the maintenance exercise commences on Friday morning, TCN has expressed confidence that the exercise will be completed successfully and that power supply will be restored promptly, minimising any inconvenience to customers in the affected areas.
