The Electoral Committee of the Nigerian Bar Association (ECNBA) has delayed the start of the 2026 NBA National Elections after its electronic voting platform was targeted in what it described as a coordinated cyberattack. The disruption forced the committee to postpone the commencement of voting, which was originally scheduled for midnight on Saturday, July 18, 2026.
In a statement issued on Saturday, the ECNBA said the voting process would begin later in the morning after its technical team and the election service provider worked to restore the integrity of the platform. The committee said the attack was deliberate and aimed at interfering with the smooth conduct of the election.
The ECNBA explained that its cybersecurity team immediately activated emergency response measures after detecting the attack. According to the committee, efforts were focused on containing the threat, protecting the voting system and ensuring that the platform was safe before allowing lawyers to cast their ballots.
The electoral body assured NBA members that no votes were recorded during the period the system was affected. It said the integrity of the election remained protected because the platform was taken offline before any voting activity could be completed.
The incident occurred after months of preparations and controversy surrounding the 2026 NBA elections. The Electoral Committee, chaired by Chief Aham Ejelam (SAN), had insisted that the election would proceed on July 18 despite earlier disagreements, legal challenges and concerns raised by some members of the legal profession.
The ECNBA was established to oversee the election of national officers of the Nigerian Bar Association, the umbrella organisation representing lawyers across Nigeria. The committee is led by Ejelam, with Ibrahim Aliyu Nassarawa serving as secretary, alongside other members appointed to supervise the electoral process.
Ahead of the election, several legal practitioners had raised concerns about the process, including disagreements over leadership arrangements and the role of the electoral committee. Court proceedings and internal debates had previously created uncertainty around the election timetable before the committee maintained that the polls would go ahead.
The 2026 NBA presidential race attracted attention, with Senior Advocates of Nigeria including Aare Olumuyiwa Akinboro (SAN), Oyinkansola Badejo-Okunsanya (SAN) and Lateef Omoyemi Akangbe (SAN) among those seeking to lead the association. The election is expected to determine the next leadership direction of the Nigerian legal profession.
Following the cyber incident, the ECNBA warned lawyers to rely only on official communication channels and avoid unofficial voting links, saying unauthorised platforms could be connected to attempts to compromise the electoral process.
The committee also confirmed that candidates, their representatives and election observers remained at the designated monitoring centre while the situation was addressed. It reassured members that the process remained under official supervision.
Cybersecurity experts have increasingly warned that electronic voting systems require strong protection because attacks targeting digital election platforms can undermine public confidence if not properly managed. The NBA incident highlights the growing challenges organisations face as more democratic processes move online.
The ECNBA has apologised for the delay and reaffirmed its commitment to delivering what it described as a free, fair and credible election. The committee said it remained determined to complete the process despite what it called criminal interference.
