A former chairman of Zurmi Local Government Area and serving Permanent Commissioner in Zamfara State, Alhaji Aminu Atiku Zurmi, narrowly escaped death on Saturday, August 15, 2026, when armed bandits opened fire on his vehicle, killing one of his passengers. The attack, which occurred along a stretch of road between Unguwar Rogo and Unguwar Sarkin Musulmi, shortly after the Sabon Garin Kaura community, has once again exposed the deteriorating security situation across Zamfara State, where travelling between communities has become a dangerous gamble.
According to conflict reporter Bakatsine, who confirmed the incident in a post on X, the former council chairman was travelling to Gusau, the state capital, when the assailants ambushed his vehicle and unleashed a barrage of gunfire. One of the passengers, identified as Alhaji Kabiru, was struck and killed in the attack. The former chairman and other occupants of the vehicle, however, survived the assault.
The attack comes amid persistent insecurity in parts of Zamfara, where armed groups have continued to carry out attacks and kidnappings. Zamfara State has become the epicentre of Nigeria's banditry crisis, where armed groups routinely carry out kidnappings, cattle rustling, and deadly raids on rural communities. What began as localised disputes over grazing land and cattle theft has escalated into organised violence, with criminal networks exploiting the state's abundant gold deposits to finance their operations. According to reports, illegal mining has not only enriched bandit groups but also drawn in transnational smuggling networks, linking Zamfara's insecurity to broader regional crime economies.
The attack on the former chairman's vehicle follows a series of violent incidents in Zurmi LGA. On August 13, the Zamfara State Police Command foiled a separate bandit attack in Zurmi and rendered safe a suspected improvised explosive device discovered along the Gurusu–Gwashi Road in Bukkuyum Local Government Area. Earlier in June, bandits killed four people and abducted several travellers in separate attacks within the same local government area. The frequency of these attacks has left residents in a state of fear, with many questioning the government's ability to protect them.
Bakatsine, the reporter who broke the news, expressed concern over the growing insecurity on roads across Zamfara State and the risks faced by residents travelling between communities. In his post, he posed a question that resonates with many Nigerians: "How long will people continue to risk their lives simply by travelling on roads in Zamfara?" He also prayed for the deceased, saying, "May Allah forgive him and grant him Jannatul Firdaus and bring an end to this endless violence in Zamfara."
The killing of Alhaji Kabiru is a stark reminder of the human cost of Zamfara's security crisis. Every day, residents of the state are forced to navigate roads that have become killing fields, where bandits operate with impunity. The attack on a former local government chairman, a figure who represents the state's political establishment, underscores the reach of these criminal networks and the failure of the state to protect even its own officials.
As the people of Zamfara mourn the loss of another life, the question remains: how long will the violence continue, and what will it take for the government to finally bring an end to the bloodshed?
