A 48-year-old woman, Mrs Iyabo Sowunmi, has been arrested for attempting to smuggle a psychoactive substance, suspected to be the synthetic drug commonly known as "Colos," into the Medium Security Custodial Centre, Ibara, Abeokuta, Ogun State. The suspect was apprehended on Friday, August 28, 2026, at about 1:33 p.m. during a routine screening at the facility's main entrance.
According to a statement by the Ogun State Command of the Nigerian Correctional Service, signed by its Public Relations Officer, Odukoya Olayinka, Mrs Sowunmi had visited an inmate on death row, identified as Dare Sowunmi. During the standard security check, correctional officers discovered a sachet of Milo beverage powder in her possession. Upon closer inspection, the sachet was found to contain substances suspected to be Colos, a dangerous synthetic cannabis variant.
The discovery underscores the vigilance of the correctional personnel and their commitment to preventing illicit substances and other prohibited items from entering custodial facilities. Following her arrest, Mrs Sowunmi was handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency for further investigation and possible prosecution.
Reacting to the incident, the Controller of Corrections, Ogun State Command, Kamoru Adesina, commended the officers involved for their alertness and professionalism. He reiterated the Service's zero-tolerance policy towards drug trafficking and other criminal activities within custodial facilities. Adesina stressed that correctional centres were established for the reformation and rehabilitation of inmates and should not be allowed to become channels for the circulation of illicit substances.
The command has warned members of the public against attempting to compromise the security of correctional facilities through the introduction of prohibited items. It added that anyone found engaging in such acts would be dealt with in accordance with the law.
