The South African Police Service has arrested 12 suspects in connection with the brutal mob killing of a foreign national shepherd who was allegedly beaten to death after being accused of stealing a lamb in the Free State province. The incident occurred at the Mashaeng Commonage near Fouriesburg, where police discovered the body of the victim, a foreign national, on Thursday, September 3, 2026. The deceased had sustained multiple bruises to his upper body and injuries to his eyes, according to police reports.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the victim, a foreign national shepherd, had been accused of stealing a lamb and allegedly slaughtering it near a local dam, where some of the carcass was thrown into the water, leaving only the head and legs to be found. The investigation led to the arrest of an initial suspect who was allegedly found in possession of a cellphone belonging to the deceased, which subsequently led to the arrest of 11 additional suspects. A total of 12 suspects, aged between 24 and 59, have been arrested and charged with murder. Among them, 10 are foreign nationals, while two are South African nationals from Mashaeng township near Fouriesburg. The suspects are expected to appear before the Fouriesburg Magistrate's Court on Monday, September 7, 2026, to face murder charges.
The Free State Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Thabang Lesia, welcomed the arrests while strongly condemning the alleged mob justice. "People suspected of committing crimes must be handed over to the police to allow proper investigations to take place," Lesia said. "Taking the law into your own hands is not a solution to crime. Those found to have committed offences will be brought before the courts to face justice." He urged community members to work with the police by reporting criminal activities and allowing law enforcement agencies to deal with suspected offenders within the confines of the law.
The incident has once again highlighted the persistent issue of mob justice and xenophobic violence in South Africa. The killing of a foreign national over an alleged livestock theft is not an isolated case. The South African government has faced increasing pressure to address xenophobic violence, with countries like Nigeria and Ghana demanding safety for their citizens. In June 2026, International Relations Minister Ronald Lamola dismissed claims that Nigerian and Ghanaian nationals were killed during anti-immigration protests, confirming only two Mozambican nationals had been killed. However, the latest incident in the Free State underscores the ongoing vulnerability of foreign nationals, particularly those working in rural areas as shepherds.
Mob justice remains a significant challenge in South Africa, where communities often take the law into their own hands due to perceived police inefficiency or a lack of trust in the criminal justice system.
