A fire outbreak suspected to have been caused by a power surge has gutted parts of a residential duplex and a shuttle bus at Mopol Base Junction, along the Old Amansea-Awka Road in Anambra State, leaving a trail of destruction running into several millions of naira .
The incident occurred on Saturday, September 5, 2026, at about 6:00 p.m., when a fire started in one of the apartments and quickly spread to adjoining sections of the building before engulfing a shuttle bus parked within the compound . The affected property comprised a duplex with a boys' quarters apartment, along with household furniture and other valuables .
The Anambra State Fire Service received a distress call at approximately 6:30 p.m. on Saturday and swiftly mobilised its personnel and firefighting equipment to the scene . Chukwudi Chiketa, Head of the Media and Publicity Unit of the Anambra State Fire Service, confirmed that firefighters arrived and immediately commenced aggressive containment and extinguishing operations to bring the fire under control and prevent it from spreading to adjoining properties .
Through the timely intervention of the firefighters, the blaze was successfully contained and extinguished by about 7:30 p.m. . According to Chiketa, a preliminary investigation indicates that the fire was caused by a power surge . Fortunately, no life was lost and no injury was recorded in the incident .
However, the fire affected roofing materials, household furniture, sections of the walls, and other structural components of the premises, with the shuttle bus also reportedly damaged . The incident caused panic among residents, who struggled to salvage their belongings from the flames .
The Anambra State Fire Service used the incident to reiterate the importance of prompt emergency response in preventing fire outbreaks from escalating and causing greater damage to lives and property, urging residents to make timely calls to the Fire Service when emergencies arise .
