The Kano State Police Command has arrested two suspects in connection with the brutal killing of prominent social media political commentator Ibrahim Khalil Dan Shagamu, bringing a measure of relief to a community that has spent the week demanding answers for a death that has shaken the state's political landscape. The arrest was announced on Wednesday, September 10, 2026, in a statement issued by the Command's Public Relations Officer, Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Adamu Bakori. Dan Shagamu was attacked in his residence in Gaida Quarters, Kumbotso Local Government Area, on the night of September 8, 2026, after unknown hoodlums forced their way into his home and attacked him with sharp objects. He was rushed to Murtala Mohammed Specialists Hospital in Kano, where a medical doctor confirmed him dead on arrival.
The police account of the incident reveals a rapid and coordinated response that began with a distress report from the Commander of the Gaida Vigilante Group at about 11:30 p.m. on the night of the attack. According to the statement, the vigilante commander reported that unknown hoodlums had forcibly entered the deceased's residence and attacked him. Operatives of the Kumbotso Police Division were immediately dispatched to the scene, but by the time they arrived and transported Dan Shagamu to the hospital, it was already too late. The vigilante group's prompt alert, however, became the foundation for the intelligence-led operation that followed.
The arrests were carried out by the Divisional Police Officer of Kumbotso Division, working in collaboration with operatives of the Command's tactical units and community stakeholders. The police said the operation was intelligence-driven, and the two suspects are currently in custody undergoing interrogation. Efforts have been intensified to apprehend any other persons who may be connected to the crime. The Command said statements were being obtained from relevant persons, and forensic procedures were ongoing to establish the full facts and the motive behind the attack.
Kano State Commissioner of Police Ibrahim Adamu Bakori expressed deep concern over the incident and extended his condolences to the family of the deceased. He reaffirmed the Command's commitment to ensuring that perpetrators of violent crimes are identified, arrested, and prosecuted in accordance with the law. The Command will not relent in its mandate to protect lives and property, Bakori said, assuring the people of Kano that justice will be pursued to its logical conclusion. He also commended the Gaida Vigilante Group for its timely information, noting that the development underscored the effectiveness of community policing and partnership in crime prevention.
The killing of Dan Shagamu has sparked widespread condemnation from opposition politicians, rights organisations, and political groups, who have called for a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death. Former Kano State Governor and opposition politician Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso said in a post on X that Dan Shagamu's body was found in a pool of blood at his home, describing the incident as a horrific attack. He urged the Kano State Government to constitute an investigative panel to probe the killing and ensure that those responsible are brought to justice. Kwankwaso also issued a stern warning that should the authorities fail to take decisive and transparent action, the incoming NDC Government would, upon assuming office, launch a full investigation and take all necessary steps to hold those responsible accountable.
Amnesty International Nigeria also condemned the killing in strong terms, calling for a thorough investigation and stressing that outspoken individuals and critics must be protected in a democracy. In a democracy, outspoken persons or critics are accommodated, listened to, not killed, the organisation declared. The rights group had previously warned that as the 2027 general elections approach, it continues to receive disturbing reports of politically related threats to life and intimidation. The Kano State Chairman of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, Husaini Mai Riga, also described the killing as deeply disturbing and unacceptable, saying it posed a serious threat to press freedom, public safety, and democratic values in the state. He urged the state government and security agencies to identify and prosecute those responsible.
The tragedy carries an even darker dimension. Daily Trust reported that Dan Shagamu had previously raised an alarm over death threats to his life, appealing directly to the Kano State Governor, the Emir of Kano, and the police for protection in a video posted on his social media page. He narrated incidents of being harassed by neighbours and their children, who allegedly pelted him with stones, damaged his television, and surrounded his house to insult him. He reported the matter to the Gaida village head, who escalated it to the Ja'en village head, but said the issue was beyond their power. They are after me, and they are our neighbours' children, he pleaded in the video. The neighbours are aware but have conspired. I am asking for help, please.
The Kano State Police Command has deployed additional patrols and intelligence-gathering operations to Gaida and surrounding areas to maintain law and order and prevent any breakdown of peace. The Command urged members of the public to remain vigilant and continue to provide credible information to the police through the nearest police station or the Command's emergency lines. The suspects will be charged to court upon the conclusion of the investigation.
