Awka South Local Government Area has officially inaugurated its Food and Nutrition Steering Committees, marking a significant step towards enhancing the implementation of Nigeria’s National Policy on Food and Nutrition at the grassroots level. The inauguration ceremony took place at the Awka South Secretariat podium and was conducted by the State National Team for Food and Nutrition (N-774 Initiative), led by Dr. Mrs. Rose Amasiani.
Prince Chinedu Okafor, Mayor of Awka South LGA, commended the capabilities of the selected committee members, expressing confidence in their ability to execute their mandate. “You have the willpower to deliver on your responsibilities. I charge you to work in line with the stipulated and prescribed action plan to promote healthy living and sustainable development across all communities,” he stated.
Dr. Mrs. Rose Amasiani, State Coordinator for the National Policy on Food and Nutrition, emphasized the need for synergy and collaboration, advocating a bottom-up approach to policy implementation. “We must fast-track progress through inclusive representation. Our scorecards should reflect grassroots evaluation and data generation specific to Awka South,” she said, highlighting the importance of regular review meetings to track progress.
The newly inaugurated committee comprises the Deputy Mayor as Chairman, the Secretary of the Council, Heads of Departments for Education and Welfare, Agriculture, and Supervisors for Education and Health. The State Nutrition Team in attendance included Dr. Rose Amasiani, Mrs. Amaka Amakom, and Miss Okoye Kenechukwu.
The inauguration underscores a strategic commitment to achieving nutrition security and sustainable development goals within Awka South LGA, ensuring that all citizens have equitable access to adequate nutrition while strengthening the Local Government’s capacity to implement national policy effectively.
