APC Sweeps Rivers LG Elections as PDP Secures Strongholds

Published on 1 September 2025 at 08:29

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has emerged dominant in the just-concluded Rivers State local government elections, clinching victories in 20 of the 23 local government areas, while the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) secured wins in only three councils, including the strategic Obio/Akpor and Port Harcourt City LGAs.

The outcome reflects a major political shift in the state, as the ruling PDP in Rivers was edged out in most areas, even with Governor Siminalayi Fubara losing his own Opobo/Nkoro LGA to the opposition. Analysts say the results could reshape political alignments ahead of future state and national contests.

Meanwhile, the Sole Administrator of Rivers State, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (rtd.), hailed the peaceful conduct of the polls. During a monitoring exercise across polling units, he commended the massive voter turnout, orderly behavior of electorates, and strict adherence to electoral guidelines, describing the process as “a victory for grassroots democracy.”

The Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) has since confirmed the results, marking one of the most hotly contested council polls in the state’s recent history.
