Wike Warns PDP Against Re-Admitting Peter Obi, Calls Move ‘Counter-Productive’

The debate over the possible return of former Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate Peter Obi to the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has drawn sharp criticism from Minister of Transport, Rotimi Amaechi Wike. Speaking to journalists in Abuja on Monday, Wike described the idea of bringing Obi back into the PDP fold as “counter-productive” and warned that it could further destabilize the party.

Bala Mohammed, Governor of Bauchi State, and Senator Abba Moro of Benue South, among other party leaders, have reportedly engaged in discussions with Obi and former President Goodluck Jonathan over the possibility of Obi rejoining the PDP. Obi left the party days before the 2023 presidential primary, citing that “recent developments in the party do not support constructive contributions,” and subsequently joined the Labour Party on May 27, 2022, becoming its presidential candidate for the 2023 elections.

Wike questioned why Obi, who had previously described the PDP as “rotten” and publicly discredited the party, should now be considered for its presidential ticket. “Obi was abusing the party, saying it is rotten. So now the party is suddenly good enough for him to come and contest on its platform?” he asked. The minister warned that reopening the doors to Obi could “destroy the party further” and compared such ambition to going to “Satan’s house.”

In the 2023 elections, Obi polled 6,101,533 votes, placing third behind PDP candidate Atiku Abubakar with 6,984,520 votes and eventual winner Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who scored 8,794,726 votes.
