Following the expiration of the tenure of the Cross River State Executive Committee on Thursday, September 18, 2025, the National Working Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has directed the South South Zonal Caretaker Committee to take charge of the state chapter. The move is aimed at ensuring continuity and stability within the party as it prepares for the election of a new state executive during the upcoming state congress scheduled for Saturday, September 27, 2025.
The caretaker committee, headed by Chief Emmanuel Ogidi, is expected to liaise closely with the NWC to oversee all activities leading to the congress. In a statement, the National Publicity Secretary, Hon. Debo Ologunagba, urged all party leaders, stakeholders, and members in Cross River State to remain united and steadfast, emphasizing that the directive is designed to safeguard the party’s interests and maintain cohesion during the transitional period.
Political analysts observe that the appointment of the zonal caretaker committee underscores the PDP’s determination to manage internal transitions carefully, preventing disputes that could weaken the party’s position in the state. With the 2027 general elections on the horizon, maintaining a unified and organized state chapter is seen as crucial for sustaining the PDP’s influence in Cross River State. Observers also note that the proactive intervention by the NWC may help mitigate potential factionalism and ensure that the upcoming state congress is conducted transparently and efficiently.
The directive reflects a broader strategy by the PDP to strengthen its structures at the state level while reinforcing the importance of unity among party members. By placing the state chapter under a trusted zonal committee, the party aims to navigate leadership changes smoothly, preserve internal harmony, and position itself favorably in the evolving political landscape of the South South region.
