In a move aimed at deepening cultural relations between Japan and Africa, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) has officially designated the city of Kisarazu as the “Hometown of Nigeria.” The announcement was made on Thursday, August 21, during the 9th Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD9).

The initiative, titled “JICA Africa Hometown,” also named Nagai in Yamagata Prefecture as the Hometown of Tanzania, Sanjo in Niigata Prefecture for Ghana, and Imabari in Ehime Prefecture for Mozambique. The program seeks to strengthen relationships by linking Japanese municipalities directly with African countries.

Receiving the certificate on behalf of Nigeria, Charge d’Affaires Mrs. Florence Akinyemi Adeseke, who is also the Acting Ambassador to Japan, joined Mayor Watanabe Yoshikuni of Kisarazu in formalizing the partnership. Kisarazu previously hosted the Nigerian contingent for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, where athletes conducted pre-games training and acclimatization before the Games.

JICA emphasized that the initiative will provide a platform for cultural exchange, mutual understanding, and stronger ties between the people of Nigeria and the Japanese host city.
