The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has expressed satisfaction with the conduct of the ongoing local government elections in Rivers State.

Speaking to journalists after casting his vote at Polling Unit 007, Ward 9 in Rumuepirikom, Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, Wike praised President Bola Tinubu for ensuring the elections took place, noting that the Supreme Court had earlier ruled against the use of caretaker committees in local governments.

According to him, holding elections is critical for local governments to access funds directly from the Federation Account, a move he said would stabilize governance at the grassroots level.

Wike also commended residents for their impressive turnout, especially in residential areas, and highlighted reports of strong participation from rural communities. He stressed that the polls were in line with the law, assuring that the process would stand the test of legality.

“This election guarantees that local councils will have elected leaders, which is necessary for funds to flow and development to reach the grassroots,” he said, adding that the exercise marked an important step toward strengthening democracy in the state.
