Delta Governor Vows Justice Over Abraka Killing by Security Operatives

Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has pledged that justice will be delivered following the killing of a yet-to-be-identified young woman in Abraka by security operatives.

The tragic incident occurred when operatives, reportedly in pursuit of suspected criminals, allegedly fired shots that struck the victim. She was rushed to a nearby hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.

In a statement released through his Chief Press Secretary, Sir Festus Ahon, Governor Oborevwori described the killing as “very unfortunate” and avoidable if the operatives had adhered to standard operational procedures. He expressed condolences to the bereaved family and urged residents of Abraka to remain calm while investigations unfold.

The governor further charged security agencies to exercise maximum restraint and professionalism in the discharge of their duties to avoid needless loss of innocent lives. He also reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to protecting the lives and property of all residents in the state.

This incident reopens long-standing concerns about the conduct of security operatives in Nigeria, particularly regarding the use of firearms in civilian areas. On one hand, the governor’s swift response and promise of justice may help calm tensions and reassure the public of government accountability. However, skepticism remains, as past cases of extra-judicial killings have often ended without significant punishment for those involved. The coming weeks will test whether Oborevwori’s administration can break that cycle or whether this tragedy will join the long list of unresolved cases that continue to erode public trust in law enforcement.
