Sowore Alleges Collapse of Judiciary in Gombe Under Governor Inuwa Yahaya

Human rights activist and politician Omoyele Sowore has raised alarm over what he describes as the systematic collapse of the judiciary in Gombe State under Governor Inuwa Yahaya’s administration.

According to Sowore, the Gombe State High Court—constitutionally expected to operate with 20 judges—is currently functioning with only six, a situation he says has crippled the judicial process and left citizens stranded without timely access to justice. He noted that repeated appeals from the Chief Judge, as well as interventions from the National Judicial Council (NJC) to recruit additional judges, have been ignored by the governor.

Sowore recalled Governor Yahaya’s earlier refusal in 2020 to confirm Justice Beatrice Iliya as Chief Judge, alleging that the decision was influenced by gender and religious bias. He further accused the governor of deliberately neglecting the judiciary due to its limited opportunities for financial gain, while approving projects such as a ₦68 billion state secretariat—originally bid at ₦30 billion—raising suspicions of inflated contracts and possible self-enrichment.

He described the situation as a tragedy for the people of Gombe, who, in his words, are denied justice while public resources are diverted into “vanity projects and political patronage.”
