On September 3, 2025, the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) hosted a pivotal Roundtable Engagement in Abuja, bringing together State Commissioners of Information from all 36 states, alongside key stakeholders in Nigeria’s communication and governance sectors.
Themed “Partnering for Strengthening Transparency and Accountability at State and Local Government Levels through Strategic Communication,” the forum served as an agenda-setting platform to explore practical strategies for embedding communication as a central tool in Nigeria’s fight against corruption.
Discussions centered on the power of strategic communication to build public trust, mobilize citizens, and reinforce accountability mechanisms at grassroots level. Participants stressed that state information managers play a frontline role in shaping public narratives, enlightening citizens, and tailoring anti-corruption messages to align with local cultures and contexts.
A participant at the roundtable noted that information officers across Nigeria must view themselves not only as government spokespeople but also as catalysts for change, bridging the gap between institutions and the people they serve.
Beyond the dialogue sessions, the Forum of Commissioners of Information also paid a courtesy visit to the Honourable Minister of Information and National Orientation, reaffirming their commitment to collaborate closely with the federal ministry. The visit underscored the need for synergy between federal and state communication strategies to ensure coherence and sustainability in the anti-corruption drive.
The engagement concluded with a renewed call for collective action. Stakeholders emphasized that combating corruption requires more than institutional mechanisms; it demands sustained citizen participation, grassroots mobilization, and transparent information management.
Participants agreed that State Commissioners of Information, working hand-in-hand with the Federal Ministry of Information and National Orientation, must lead efforts to showcase Nigeria’s core values, uphold integrity, and strengthen national unity — irrespective of political affiliation or ideology.
