Nigeria and Angola have deepened diplomatic ties with the signing of two key agreements aimed at strengthening cooperation on drug control and cultural exchange.

The agreements, which cover collaboration in tackling illicit production, trafficking of narcotics and psychotropic substances, as well as cultural cooperation and exchange, were formalized during the 5th Session of the Nigeria–Angola Bilateral Economic Joint Commission held on Thursday, September 11, in Luanda, Angola.

Nigeria’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, signed on behalf of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, while Angola’s Secretary of State for International Cooperation, Domingos Custodio Vieira Lopes, represented his country.

In addition to the agreements, a Twinning Accord was sealed between Bayelsa State and Angola’s Namibe Province. Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, and Governor Augusto Archer de Sousa Mangueira of Namibe signed the pact, which is expected to foster sub-national cooperation in key sectors.

According to officials, other memoranda of understanding already in the works are scheduled to be finalized and signed in the near future.

Meanwhile, a high-level experts’ meeting between both countries also reviewed several areas of mutual interest, underscoring the commitment of Nigeria and Angola to deepen bilateral relations across multiple fronts.
