Elder statesman and political figure, Chief Ibas, has declared that his assignment in Rivers State under the mandate of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has been completed, signaling a shift that could see Governor Siminalayi Fubara return fully to power.
Speaking to journalists in Port Harcourt on Saturday, Ibas explained that his role was never permanent but tied to specific political responsibilities aimed at stabilizing the state’s governance structure and fulfilling directives from the presidency.
“My mission here has been successfully accomplished. The mandate given to me by President Bola Tinubu has been discharged in full. It is now time for Governor Fubara to take full charge once again as the elected leader of the people,” Ibas said.
While he did not go into details of the presidential mandate, Ibas noted that the objective was to ensure peace, political stability, and continued development in Rivers State amidst months of tension between political blocs.
Political observers believe Ibas’ withdrawal could ease the prolonged standoff in the state’s governance, clearing the path for Fubara to consolidate his authority and resume his leadership role without interference.
The announcement has stirred mixed reactions across Rivers State, with some residents welcoming it as a step toward peace, while others remain cautious, noting that the political landscape remains fluid.
Chief Ibas, however, assured the people that he remains committed to supporting unity and progress in Rivers, stressing that “the era of uncertainty must give way to stability.”
As of press time, the Rivers State Government has not issued an official response to Ibas’ declaration.
