Ahead of the 2027 general elections, a non-governmental organisation has launched the New Nigeria Movement, aimed at educating and sensitising ordinary Nigerians on the importance of rejecting vote selling. The movement, which brings together youths, women, and the elderly, deliberately excludes the elite from membership to maintain its independence and avoid compromising its objectives.
Speaking on the launch, 65-year-old Emmanuel Ewoko, Secretary of the Board of Trustees, stressed that Nigeria has faced a persistent leadership crisis since independence, and it is imperative to get it right in 2027. Other members, including the national coordinator, Kenneth Ibuchi, emphasized that when ordinary citizens refuse to sell their votes, politicians will have no leverage to manipulate the electorate. The group outlined its mission as promoting massive sensitisation of Nigerians, encouraging them to vote for credible candidates rather than merely supporting political parties, and fostering a culture of accountability and responsible leadership across the country.
