The Honourable Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo SAN, CON, FCIArb (UK), has called for enhanced intermodal collaboration among stakeholders in Nigeria's transport sector to strengthen safety standards across all modes of transportation. The Minister represented the Federal Government of Nigeria and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, at the Multimodal Transportation Stakeholders' Workshop organised by the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) on July 31, 2025.
The Minister applauded the NSIB for convening the timely workshop themed "Strengthening Transport Safety Standards through Collaboration." He emphasized the importance of collaboration among stakeholders in the transport sector to ensure safety standards are strengthened across all modes of transportation. The Minister commended the NSIB's preventive and non-punitive approach, established under the NSIB Act of 2022, as a robust framework for addressing transport accident causes to prevent future occurrences.
The Minister acknowledged the NSIB's expanding role as an independent investigative body covering air, rail, marine, and road transport incidents under the leadership of Captain Alex Badeh Jnr. He commended the Bureau's efforts in promoting safety and preventing accidents in the transport sector. The NSIB's role is critical in ensuring that transport accidents are thoroughly investigated, and measures are put in place to prevent future occurrences.
The workshop focused on three critical regulatory frameworks: the Railway (Investigation of Accidents and Incidents) Regulations Draft, the Maritime Safety Investigation Regulations Draft, and the Revised Civil Aviation (Investigation of Air Accidents and Incidents) Regulations Draft. These frameworks aim to strengthen safety protocols and prevent accidents in the transport sector. The Minister's emphasis on the importance of these frameworks underscores the need for effective regulation and oversight in the transport sector.
The Director General of NSIB, Captain Alex Badeh Jnr., emphasized the importance of collaboration among stakeholders in the transport sector. He noted that the workshop reflects a shared national commitment to enhancing transport safety and building resilient systems that align with global best practices. The Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA), Mr. Bola Oyebamiji, FCIB, also highlighted the importance of partnership between federal agencies and littoral state governments in promoting safety and efficiency in inland water transportation.
The Federal Government's advocacy for enhanced multimodal collaboration to strengthen transport safety is a step in the right direction. The NSIB's efforts in promoting safety and preventing accidents in the transport sector are commendable. The regulatory frameworks developed and implemented will play a critical role in ensuring that safety standards are strengthened across all modes of transportation. The collaboration and partnership among stakeholders in the transport sector are essential in promoting safety and efficiency in the sector.
