The ongoing season of popular reality television show Big Brother Naija (BBNaija) has come under legal scrutiny, as human rights and public morality advocate, Barrister Maduabuchi Idam, has formally petitioned the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC), demanding a ban or strict regulation of the show within 30 days.
In a strongly worded letter addressed to NBC’s Director General, titled:
“Urgent need to ban or regulate the content of the television programme described as ‘Big Brother Naija’ for obscene, indecent, and profane content, pursuant to the NBC Act 1999”,
Barr. Idam described BBNaija as morally damaging, and accused its producers of promoting explicit content, both on television and through verified social media platforms.
> “The programme is aired on national television and its profane content is proudly shared online by its host company, in total disregard for public morality,” the petition read.
A Call for Urgent Regulatory Action
While BBNaija carries an 18+ rating, the lawyer argues that the content is easily accessible to minors, particularly via social media, rendering the rating ineffective in practice. He condemned the programme as contributing nothing of educational, artistic, or social value, and asserted that it undermines Nigeria’s cultural and moral fabric.
> “Nigeria, already grappling with insecurity and moral decay, cannot afford the further erosion of public values by such unregulated content,” he stated.
Idam called on the NBC to:
Restrict BBNaija to adult-rated, tightly regulated platforms.
Ban the online distribution of explicit clips by the show’s hosts and partners.
Enforce the same broadcast standards used to sanction music artists such as Olamide, Phyno, and Wizkid in the past.
Threat of Legal Action
Barr. Idam has given the NBC a 30-day ultimatum to either act on the petition or face legal action for negligence and failure to uphold the regulatory mandates of the NBC Act.
> “The NBC must act now to prevent further erosion of our societal values,” he warned.
The petition has already ignited widespread public debate, with citizens, advocacy groups, and industry stakeholders taking sides on the matter.
