Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, CON, has restated his administration’s commitment to advancing the livestock and animal industry in Gombe State, describing it as a vital pillar of economic development, job creation, and food security.
The Governor made this declaration while receiving the Chief Executive Officer of the National Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support Project (L-PRES), Malam Sanusi Abubakar, who led a delegation on a two-day working visit to assess project implementation across the state.
Governor Yahaya described L-PRES as a strategic partner in development, praising the impactful projects already implemented across the state, particularly in livestock processing, animal health, and milk production. He highlighted the construction of a modern animal hospital and the recently approved L-PRES National Programme Office in Gombe as major strides in transforming the state’s pasture and livestock sector.
“Gombe is committed to becoming a livestock production hub,” the Governor said. “The support from L-PRES is helping us align our development goals with national priorities. We are building not just infrastructure, but a future for pastoralism, jobs, and food security.”
In his remarks, Malam Sanusi Abubakar commended the Governor’s visionary leadership and acknowledged the administration’s work in integrating agriculture with animal welfare. He particularly praised the development of a 184-hectare agri-campus, aimed at creating jobs and modernizing livestock production.
The L-PRES Coordinator also lauded Gombe State’s effort in reviving the 144,000-hectare Wawa-Zange Grazing Reserve, noting its importance in reducing herder migration, improving fodder availability, and addressing long-standing socio-environmental challenges.
“We’ve seen the great work done in Wawa-Zange, especially in water provision, which has solved problems that have plagued the livestock sector for years,” Malam Sanusi stated. “L-PRES is fully committed to supporting these initiatives with further investment in veterinary services, dairy processing centers, access roads, and modern abattoirs.”
Gombe is among the four states selected nationwide to implement the PVP Veterinary Care Programme, a fact Malam Sanusi attributed to the state’s clear commitment and performance.
As part of the visit, the L-PRES team inspected ongoing construction projects and expressed satisfaction with the quality and pace of work. Malam Sanusi also revealed plans to establish a World Animal Market and Research Center in Gombe, reinforcing its status as a regional hub for livestock health, trade, and innovation.
In his final remarks, he called on Governor Yahaya, who serves as the Chairman of the Northern Governors' Forum, to deepen regional collaboration with L-PRES, especially in promoting sustainable grazing and livestock practices across northern Nigeria.
