Governor Sheriff Oborevwori on Tuesday launched the Widows Welfare Scheme at the Dome Event Centre, Asaba, pledging sustained support for vulnerable groups in Delta State under his administration’s MORE Agenda.

Speaking at the flag-off ceremony, the governor said no fewer than 10,000 widows across the 270 federal wards of the state have been captured as beneficiaries of the programme. Each will begin receiving a monthly stipend, with an initial three months’ arrears to be paid upfront directly into their bank accounts.

In addition, Governor Oborevwori directed that all widows under the scheme be enrolled in the State Contributory Health Insurance Scheme, to enable them access free medical care in their various local government areas.

“This scheme is not political. The beneficiaries were carefully selected through a transparent and credible process. Our goal is to give vulnerable women a sense of belonging and expand our social investment programmes in line with the MORE Agenda,” the governor said.

He explained that the initiative reflects his administration’s commitment to inclusive governance, especially by ensuring that widows and other disadvantaged groups are not left behind in the state’s development agenda.

The Widows Welfare Scheme adds to a growing list of social programmes in Delta, targeting poverty reduction, healthcare support, and empowerment of vulnerable populations.
