In a strategic effort to enhance troop resilience and save lives during frontline operations, the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) conducted its first-ever Pre-Deployment Training for Medical Evacuation Teams from 18–20 August 2025. The programme was held at the Nigerian Air Force School of Medical Sciences and Aviation Medicine (NAFSMSAM) in Kaduna.
Combat environments in counter-insurgency operations pose significant medical risks. Rapid access to medical care and effective battlefield first aid can be the difference between life and death. This training equips personnel with critical skills in Airway Management, Bleeding Control, and Psychological First Aid, aiming to curb combat-related fatalities before soldiers can be evacuated to hospitals or safe zones.
The initiative aligns with the NAF’s broader mission to reposition its personnel as a highly professional and people-centric force, capable not only of defending national security but also preserving life. By enhancing medical response capacity, the Air Force strengthens troop morale, operational effectiveness, and overall combat readiness.
During the training, personnel learned advanced lifesaving techniques and received practical exercises to ensure readiness in challenging operational conditions. The programme emphasized both technical proficiency and psychological preparedness, ensuring that no soldier is left behind during combat operations.
The Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Hasan Bala Abubakar, described the training as a strategic boost to operational effectiveness, noting that personnel must be equipped to defend the nation while preserving life under the harshest conditions.
“This training reflects our commitment to building a combat-ready, resilient force capable of saving lives in the harshest conditions,” he said.
The Chief of Medical Services (CMS), Air Vice Marshal Anthony Chidi Ekpe, praised NAFSMSAM for its role in advancing emergency medical capacity, stating:
“This training goes beyond skills; it is about confidence, preparedness, and the assurance that no soldier is left behind on the battlefield. The knowledge gained will serve our personnel in and out of uniform, reaffirming NAF’s leadership in combat casualty care.”
The successful completion of the Pre-Deployment Training marks a milestone in the NAF’s commitment to combat casualty care, troop morale, and operational excellence. As insurgency challenges continue across the North East, the initiative ensures that NAF personnel are not only prepared for combat but also empowered to save lives and provide critical medical support in high-risk scenarios.
