Shehu Sani Warns Against Renewed Dialogue With Bandits, Calls for Decisive Action

Published on 17 September 2025 at 09:48

Former Kaduna Central Senator, Shehu Sani, has spoken strongly against the renewed move to dialogue with bandit leaders in north-west Nigeria, stressing that those behind killings, mass kidnappings, and sexual violence should be brought to justice or forcefully eliminated in the theatre of operations. He recalled that former Katsina governor, Aminu Masari, once attempted a peace deal with the armed groups but the effort collapsed, just as previous interventions involving Islamic scholar Sheikh Ahmad Gumi also failed due to the bandits’ lack of fidelity to agreements. Sani insisted that the shedding of innocent blood must come to an end by any means practicable, warning that constant compromises only embolden the criminals.

The implication of his message is that continued reliance on failed dialogue weakens public trust in government and emboldens violent groups who already have a track record of dishonouring agreements. It also reflects the growing frustration of communities who feel abandoned by security forces and see no deterrence for those who commit atrocities. While his call points to the urgency of decisive action, it also raises concerns about the need to balance firmness with accountability and long-term strategies to address root causes of the violence.

In conclusion, Sani’s warning serves as both a reminder of failed past strategies and a call for a new direction in handling the security crisis. His emphasis that innocent lives must be protected “by any means practicable” signals the urgency of finding a solution that restores peace and stability in the troubled region.
