The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has intensified its clampdown on illegal mining activities, intercepting several trucks suspected to be transporting illegally mined lithium along the Oyo–Ibadan axis.
The operation, carried out by the South West Zonal Mining Marshals during a routine patrol, uncovered multiple vehicles without valid licenses or permits. Some drivers reportedly presented questionable documents in a bid to cover up their operations.
Authorities confirmed that the seized consignments have been secured, while investigations are ongoing to trace those behind the illicit trade. The Corps emphasized that illegal mining not only deprives Nigeria of valuable revenue but also contributes to environmental degradation and insecurity within communities.
Speaking on the development, the NSCDC reiterated its commitment to protecting the nation’s natural resources from economic saboteurs. The agency further appealed to citizens to support security efforts by providing timely and credible information to help curb the menace.
Lithium is one of the most sought-after minerals in the world today, often referred to as “white gold.” It is a key raw material used in the production of rechargeable batteries for electric vehicles, mobile phones, laptops, and renewable energy storage systems.
With the global shift towards green energy and electric mobility, demand for lithium has surged, making it highly lucrative but also increasingly targeted by illegal miners. For Nigeria, which is home to large deposits of lithium and other critical minerals, the challenge lies in balancing economic opportunities with strict regulation to prevent exploitation by criminal networks.
Analysts warn that if left unchecked, illegal mining could not only cost Nigeria billions in lost revenue but also expose host communities to environmental destruction, health risks, and violent conflicts fueled by competition over resources.
The latest crackdown by NSCDC highlights the growing urgency for stronger enforcement and community involvement in safeguarding Nigeria’s mineral wealth.
