Gombe State Governor, Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya (CON), has visited Gombe State University to inspect the female annex hostel affected by last Thursday’s fire incident and to commiserate with the students and the university community over the unfortunate event.
Speaking during the visit, Governor Yahaya expressed deep concern over the incident, stating that he was greatly disturbed upon receiving the news of the fire. He said that he immediately contacted relevant authorities to contain the situation and ensure the safety of students on campus.
“I was deeply disturbed when I received the news of the fire outbreak. That very night, I spoke with the relevant authorities to ensure that the situation was quickly contained and that no student was harmed. As you can see, today, I came here with a high-powered delegation, including the Deputy Governor, the Speaker and members of the State House of Assembly, as well as other senior government officials, all to commiserate with you over this unfortunate incident,” the governor said.
Governor Yahaya emphasized that the safety and wellbeing of students remain a top priority for his administration, urging students to adhere strictly to safety rules within the school environment. He warned against cooking inside hostels and advised students to make use of designated kitchen areas to avoid future occurrences.
The Governor announced that his government would begin the construction of a new female hostel to address accommodation challenges and reduce overcrowding. He directed the Commissioners for Higher Education and Works and Housing to collaborate and expedite preparations for the project’s immediate commencement.
In addition, the Governor ordered the university management to improve fire safety infrastructure across the campus and disclosed that the State Fire Service had been instructed to carry out a full investigation into the cause of the incident to prevent recurrence.
To further support the affected students, Governor Yahaya announced a ₦20 million cash support, directing that part of the funds be used to compensate students who lost their belongings, while the remainder should be handed over to the Students’ Representative Council (SRC) for fair distribution among others, particularly those emotionally affected by the incident.
He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to improving the education sector, assuring that all learning environments in the state would continue to be safe, conducive, and well-equipped for effective teaching and learning.
The Registrar of Gombe State University, Dr. Abubakar Aliyu Bafeto, who spoke on behalf of the university community, expressed gratitude to the Governor for his compassion, timely intervention, and support. He confirmed that no life was lost or injured in the fire incident and assured that the university management would take all necessary measures to prevent a recurrence.
Governor Yahaya was accompanied by the Deputy Governor, Manassah Daniel Jatau, the Speaker of the Gombe State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Abubakar Mohammed Luggerewo, other lawmakers, the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Ibrahim Abubakar Njodi, the Chief of Staff, Alh. Abubakar Inuwa Kari, Commissioners, Heads of Agencies and Parastatals, and top security officials.
