As the world observes Cybersecurity Awareness Month, the Director General of the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), Kashifu Inuwa Abdullahi, delivered a keynote address at the Cyber Nigeria Summit in Lagos. The event, organised by the Cybersecurity Experts Association of Nigeria (CSCEAN), carried the theme “Securing Digital Economy: Strengthening Infrastructure and Harnessing the Power of AI.”

In his address, the DG detailed how Nigeria is transforming policy into actionable protection measures. He highlighted the strengthened governance framework under the amended Cybercrime Act, and a Presidential Executive Order designating critical digital information infrastructure as national infrastructure. Abdullahi also showcased the fully operational Cybersecurity Coordination Centre, which now coordinates sectoral CSIRTs and incident response across the nation.

The DG stressed the importance of building human capacity, citing the 3 Million Tech Talent initiative and the Digital Literacy for All programme, aligned with the National Digital Literacy Framework. These efforts aim to achieve 70% digital literacy by 2027 and 95% by 2030, ensuring Nigerians are well-equipped to navigate the digital economy safely.

Abdullahi emphasised that with more than half of the population living and working online, cybersecurity is a shared responsibility. He underscored the importance of embedding digital literacy and cybersecurity education at all levels, from primary school to tertiary institutions, to create a secure, AI-driven future.

He also highlighted Nigeria’s commitment to international collaboration, citing partnerships with the African Union, Smart Africa, global technology firms, and CERTs. Additionally, a national cybersecurity architecture is being developed to enforce disclosure, accountability, and information sharing, ensuring the country’s digital infrastructure is protected against evolving cyber threats.

The DG concluded by urging all stakeholders—government, private sector, and citizens—to take proactive steps in safeguarding critical infrastructure, promoting cyber awareness, and fostering a secure environment for Nigeria’s growing digital economy.
