Abuja — Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has revealed that he and his wife embarked on a spiritual pilgrimage to Rome, dedicating their prayers to Nigeria’s peace, unity, and leadership renewal.
In a statement shared after his two-day visit to the United States—where he addressed the Friendship Club on October 4 and spoke at the Ubuntu African Youth Assembly in Washington on October 5—Obi said he proceeded to Rome to join his wife for the Jubilee Year pilgrimage, a sacred Catholic observance celebrated every twenty-five years.
According to Obi, their prayers centered on thanksgiving for Nigeria’s continued unity despite challenges, repentance for national shortcomings, and a plea for divine intervention in the country’s leadership.
“We prayed for selfless and compassionate leaders whose hearts God would touch—leaders who would be truthful, altruistic, and committed to the common good,” Obi stated.
The former Anambra State Governor detailed his visits to the four major Papal Basilicas—St. Mary Major, St. Paul Outside the Walls, St. John Lateran, and St. Peter’s Basilica—where he and his wife passed through the Holy Doors, a symbolic act of spiritual renewal.
At St. Peter’s Basilica, Obi said they attended the Papal General Audience, where Pope Leo XIV delivered a message on hope and perseverance. He disclosed that they were also granted an audience with the Pope, to whom they appealed for prayers for Nigeria’s peace and progress.
Throughout their journey, Obi said they met many Nigerian pilgrims who shared their faith and optimism for a better nation.
“Faith does not absolve us of responsibility; it calls us to action,” he said. “As Nigerians, we must each continue to do our part—with honesty, diligence, and love—for the healing and progress of our country.”
Obi concluded his reflection with optimism, affirming his long-held belief that “a new Nigeria is possible.”
