YENAGOA — The Bayelsa State Government has urged traditional rulers and community leaders across the state to make meaningful sacrifices that will promote peace, unity, and sustainable development in their communities.
Deputy Governor Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo made the appeal during separate meetings with chiefs and stakeholders from Biseni Clan and the Swali Community, both in Yenagoa Local Government Area.
Speaking through his Senior Special Assistant on Media, Mr. Doubara Atasi, Senator Ewhrudjakpo emphasized that many communal disputes in the state stem from a lack of love, forgiveness, and patriotism. He stressed that progress and prosperity can only thrive where leaders act with compassion and followers show respect for constituted authority.
Addressing the Biseni Clan, the Deputy Governor reiterated that the state government’s earlier position on the unresolved chieftaincy issue remains unchanged, as the matter is still before the Court of Appeal. He stated that until the court makes a final determination, no individual will be recognized as the clan’s paramount ruler.
He directed the Chief Wariebi Williams–led Biseni Traditional Council of Chiefs to continue overseeing the affairs of the clan pending the outcome of the case. Ewhrudjakpo cautioned all parties to refrain from any actions that could endanger peace or undermine the rule of law.
“There are issues surrounding the paramount rulership of Biseni. While the matter is still in court, some individuals are attempting to coronate themselves. That is a dangerous precedent which the government will not tolerate. We must all respect the law and allow the court process to take its full course,” he warned.
Similarly, the Deputy Governor instructed the seven recognized chiefs in Swali Community to select an interim chairman to oversee traditional affairs following the suspension of their paramount ruler. He further clarified that no new Ebeniken election should be conducted, as the suspended ruler has not been permanently removed but remains under investigation.
Lawmakers and community representatives, including Chief Ayibanegiyefa Egba, Mr. Zuwa Konugah, Chief David Obuma, Chief Akile Nwaku, and others, commended the state government’s ongoing efforts to sustain peace and stability across communities.
