The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has given strong assurances that the upcoming Anambra State off-cycle governorship election will be conducted peacefully and credibly. This commitment was made by INEC Chairman, Professor Joash O. Amupitan (SAN), during the signing of the Peace Accord convened by the National Peace Committee (NPC) under the leadership of former Head of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar.
Professor Amupitan praised the NPC for its continued efforts in promoting electoral peace nationwide, emphasizing that the Peace Accord’s extension to off-cycle governorship elections has played a key role in minimizing tensions and potential violence.
“After witnessing the success of the Peace Accord at the national level, the NPC graciously agreed, five years ago, to our request to devolve its signing. This became necessary given the tensions and violence that have accompanied some past elections,” the INEC Chairman stated.
The Peace Accord signing event underscored a collaborative commitment among political parties, election officials, and civil society actors to uphold non-violence, transparency, and citizen confidence in the electoral process. Professor Amupitan reiterated INEC’s dedication to ensuring a smooth, credible, and fair election in Anambra State, assuring citizens that every measure has been put in place to safeguard the integrity of the vote.
