At the CNN Global Perspectives on Africa event in London, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Director-General of the World Trade Organization, spoke on the continent’s economic development opportunities and the challenges it faces in achieving sustainable growth. She emphasized the critical role of both global and regional trade in driving Africa’s economic transformation.
Okonjo-Iweala highlighted the innovative capabilities of Africa’s youth, noting that sectors such as fintech, agritech, healthtech, and edutech present unique opportunities for job creation and value-added trade. She underscored the importance of attracting global value chains to the continent, which could unlock higher productivity, increased employment, and more significant economic returns for African nations.
Addressing the broader vision for the continent, Okonjo-Iweala advocated for greater self-reliance and regional integration, arguing that a stronger, economically independent Africa would be better positioned to negotiate, collaborate, and compete on the global stage. She stressed that regional cooperation could enhance economic security, reduce dependency on external actors, and allow African nations to leverage their collective resources more effectively.
Her remarks highlighted a forward-looking agenda for Africa, one that balances innovation, trade, and self-determination to achieve inclusive growth and sustainable prosperity across the continent.
