The 2025 Nurses Week Celebration officially commenced on Tuesday, October 21, 2025, at the historic Arewa House, Kaduna, bringing together nurses, healthcare stakeholders, and government officials from across the state. The event was held under the global theme: “Our Nurses, Our Future: Caring for Nurses, Strengthening Economies.”
Representing Hajiya Umma K. Ahmed, Honourable Commissioner for Health, the Director of Medical Services, Dr. Gyawiya Jonathan Gajere, delivered a goodwill message recognizing the indispensable role of nurses in healthcare delivery. Dr. Gajere described nursing as “not merely a profession but a calling—the art of healing, the science of care, and the embodiment of compassion.” He further called nurses the “heart, soul, and backbone of the healthcare system,” often the first to comfort patients and the last to leave their side.
Dr. Gajere commended nurses for their work in maternal and neonatal care, calling them “guardians of life’s most delicate moments.” He also highlighted their bravery during health emergencies, pandemics, and disasters, emphasizing that investing in nurses is essential for achieving Universal Health Coverage (UHC).
Key government interventions outlined included:
-
Renovation and upgrade of 255 Primary Healthcare Centres (PHCs) to Level 2 status.
-
Renovation of 15 Secondary Health Facilities (SHFs), several already completed.
-
Payment of CONMESS and CONHESS allowances to healthcare workers.
-
Employment of 1,800 healthcare professionals across Kaduna State.
“These efforts reflect the Government’s resolve to build a strong, motivated, and resilient health workforce capable of delivering quality care to all citizens,” Dr. Gajere added.
In his welcome address, Comrade Nurse Ishaku Yakubu, State Chairman of the National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives (NANNM), described nurses as the “backbone of every healthcare system,” present from “the first cry of life to the last breath of humanity.” He emphasized that investing in nurses strengthens the nation’s economy, improves health outcomes, and boosts community productivity.
The keynote address was delivered by Professor Emmanuel Ejembi Anyebe of the Department of Nursing Sciences, University of Ilorin, who spoke on contemporary challenges and opportunities in the nursing profession.
The week-long celebration featured a health walk, scientific sessions, and an award night honoring outstanding nurses. The event concluded with a cake-cutting ceremony and cultural performances, marking the beginning of a week dedicated to celebrating the invaluable contributions of nurses to humanity.
