The Office of the President of the Senate has dismissed as false and malicious a viral social media post published by an online platform, Rant HQ, which falsely attributed a controversial statement to Senate President, His Excellency, Distinguished Senator Godswill Obot Akpabio, GCON.
In a statement signed by Hon. Eseme Eyiboh, Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the Senate President, the post was described as “a fabrication borne out of mischief and aimed at misleading the public while straining diplomatic relations.”
The false quote alleged that Senator Akpabio claimed Nigerians were “not complaining about killings and were satisfied with the condition of Nigeria.” The Office firmly denied the claim, saying:
“The Senate President never made such a statement — not publicly, privately, in writing, or in conversation. We challenge the publishers of this falsehood to produce a single shred of evidence to the contrary.”
Eyiboh clarified that the photograph used in the viral post was taken at an official event but was “deceptively deployed to lend false credibility to an entirely fabricated quote.”
Reaffirming Senator Akpabio’s reputation as “a statesman of international repute and a respected advocate of diplomacy and friendship among nations,” the statement stressed that the Senate President holds former U.S. President Donald Trump in high regard and “would never issue statements on America’s internal or foreign policy matters.”
The Office described the post as “a clear act of digital recklessness and an attempt to inflame diplomatic tensions,” urging Nigerians and the international community to disregard the misinformation entirely.
“Freedom of expression is not freedom to lie,” the statement warned. “We urge those who trade in misinformation to desist from spreading unverified and fabricated stories merely to chase online traffic.”
The Office of the Senate President reaffirmed its commitment to transparency, truth, and responsible communication, both domestically and in its engagements with international partners.
