The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory and influential Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) figure, Nyesom Wike, has dismissed recent speculation surrounding Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde potentially running for president in 2027, describing the rumours as baseless and trivial.

Speaking at a recent event, Wike emphasized that leadership is a serious responsibility and should not be pursued lightly or without order. “What’s that? We are talking about a breath of fresh air, you are talking about crap. What do you mean by not being happy for him to be a presidential candidate? Let us not trivialise this,” he stated.

Wike clarified that leadership is not determined by academic qualifications or professional titles, but by meaningful contributions and commitment to party and national development. “No, please, don’t get me wrong. It’s not about being a PhD holder, an engineer or a lawyer. No, that’s not it. It is not about waking up in the morning and saying I want to be a presidential candidate. No,” he added.

He further criticized individuals who seek political office primarily to control party structures rather than serve the public. Wike asserted his own track record in the PDP, questioning, “Which of them has contributed to the PDP more than me, even up till now?”

The remarks underscore Wike’s stance on disciplined political engagement and the need for aspirants to prioritize service over ambition within Nigeria’s ruling party.
