Ibadan—In a bid to reduce overcrowding in the state’s correctional facility, the Chief Judge of Oyo State, Justice Iyabo Yerima, on Wednesday, November 6, 2025, ordered the release of 79 inmates from the Agodi Correctional Centre in Ibadan.
The move forms part of ongoing efforts by the judiciary to improve conditions within correctional facilities and to ensure that the rights of inmates are respected, particularly those awaiting trial or serving minor sentences.
The Chief Judge emphasized that the release is in line with legal provisions aimed at decongesting prisons across the state, while ensuring public safety is not compromised.
Correctional authorities welcomed the decision, noting that the release will help improve living conditions for remaining inmates and reduce the strain on the facility’s resources.
