Washington D.C.—A newly introduced bill in the United States Congress is calling for targeted sanctions, including visa bans and asset freezes, against individuals and organisations allegedly responsible for serious violations of religious freedom in Nigeria.
The proposed legislation specifically identifies the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) and the Miyetti Allah Kautal Hore as the entities implicated in actions that lawmakers say have contributed to the persecution of Christians in Nigeria.
According to Congressional sources, the bill is part of a broader push by US lawmakers to hold accountable those accused of undermining human rights and religious freedom, and to signal international concern over ongoing reports of violence against religious communities in Nigeria.
The Nigerian government and the organisations named in the bill have not yet issued official responses to the proposed measures.
